Seal the Marble Immediately
The marble countertop should be sealed immediately after installation to prevent damage to the surface. Do not use wax to seal the surface, since it will yellow over time. Use only a stone sealer recommended by the manufacturer of your marble countertop.
Clean Up Spills Immediately
Although marble is a durable material, certain compounds can damage its finish. Oils and acidic compounds like tomato or orange juice can stain or cloud the marble finish. Wipe up spilled foods immediately to avoid long contact with the marble surface that can result in damage. If oil has left a stain, dust the stain lightly with cornstarch and allow it to dry. Then remove the cornstarch from the surface, clean the area with water and dry it carefully.
Avoid Putting Wet Objects on the Countertop
Use coasters under glassware that might create watermarks on the marble surface. Do not allow dishes to drain onto the countertop, and clean up any water spills as soon as they occur to avoiding clouding the marble surface.
Use Cutting Boards
You can avoid creating cuts and dents on the surface of the countertop by having several cutting boards in various sizes on hand at all times.
Use Trivets for Hot Dishes
The liberal use of trivets under hot pots, plates and casseroles will prevent burn marks and discoloration on the marble surface.
Clean Countertop Carefully
Use a soft bristle brush to remove dirt from the surface of the marble. Mix a few drops of dish soap into a bucket of water. Use a soft sponger to clean the marble countertop with the soapy water. Rinse carefully to prevent leaving a detergent film. Dry the countertop and lightly buff with a soft cloth.
Have Stains Removed Professionally
If your marble countertop has a serious stain that you cannot remove without damaging the stone, have the area professionally ground to remove the stain. You can then re-seal the stone and enjoy a beautiful marble surface once again.
