Your refrigerator and freezer are some of the most important appliances in your home and can benefit greatly from consistent maintenance. Performing these key care tips once or twice a year adds to the life of your fridge, which is usually cooling $100 or more of food at any given time.
Empty The Water Pan
Under your refrigerator is a pan that catches condensation dripping off the cooling coils. Though most of this moisture should evaporate on its own, it is a good practice to clean the pan periodically. Remove the front grille from the appliance and carefully slide the pan out. Discard the water and gently wipe down the pan. It is possible for mold to grow on the pan, but consistent cleaning will keep spores under control and out of your indoor air.
Defrosting
Most modern refrigerator models have a self-defrosting mode, allowing the appliance to automatically melt any frost. If you have a manual defrost fridge, however, you must turn off the fridge periodically to allow the freezer to defrost naturally. In general, frost thicker than a half inch must be removed manually rather than melted away.
Coil Cleaning
Your refrigerator employs a set of coils underneath and behind the appliance. These coils are responsible for the internal cooling temperature. Over time, the coils build up a film of dust and debris. It is critical to keep these coils clean to avoid overheating and maintain longevity. With the appliance unplugged, vacuum the coils about three times a year to keep them clear of debris. Do not vacuum them with the appliance plugged in, however. You may accidentally cause an electrical shock.
Door Seals
One of the most worn items on a refrigerator is often the door seal. Every time you open or close the door, the seal must break its hold against the metal frame. Over time, the seal slowly loses its elasticity. To prolong its life, rub it with petroleum jelly to keep the rubber lubricated. If the seal is obviously cracked or not adhering to the refrigerator, it is time to replace it.
Level It
Your refrigerator relies on a level position to keep the doors from warping. If the refrigerator is askew it could cause the doors to close at odd angles, creating a poor seal and eventually bending the door’s normal shape. Use a hand level and adjust the appliance’s feet using a hand wrench. You will prolong your appliance’s lifespan with a perfectly level position.
Maintaining your fridge and freezer is not at the top of everyone’s list, but you should put a fridge-freezer cleaning session on your calendar. By keeping a regular schedule, you can stay on top of your fridge’s maintenance and keep it humming for years to come.
However, even with the best care your refrigerator or freezer can break down. A home protection plan from American Home Shield can help you worry less and avoid high-cost repairs.
